7.6 earthquake. We are all ok.

At 8:42 this morning a powerful earthquake shook Costa Rica. I took my cue from locals and realized it was a big one. I was shopping at the Wednesday organic market in Escazu; the small pavilion we were standing under swayed like a swing being pushed.

The silence as the quake occurred was something to behold.
It was as if everyone in the entire country were holding a collective breath.

Soon after, I received this text from Isabel who never capitalizes:

OMG THERE WAS JUST AN EARTHQUAKE AND ALL OF THE WINDOWS SHOOK AND YOU COULD FEEL IT, AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE BIGGEST THEY HAD HAD IN A WHILE!!!!

Followed by:

Everyone's ok though.

Isabel echoed what I was hearing, that this quake was stronger and longer than usual. Because the epicenter was located 87 miles from San Jose and was 25 miles deep, there appears to be little damage nearby other than to peoples' nerves. Closer to the epicenter however, things appear to have been more severe. Thanks for checking on us, we are thinking of you too.

  1. Glad to hear you're all fine. Not exactly what you expected, I imagine!

I'm enjoying your occasional posts, que los niños sigan disfrutando. Pero qué experiencia!

You might find this interesting; our daughter sent it today, the first thing she's seen that talks to the living and learning abroad as a child experience (Alix was with us for one year in Madrid when she was 15--she's now 31): http://6thfloor.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/20/our-familys-experiment-in-extreme-schooling-a-postscript/
